Poland to Fulfill Convergence Criteria Gradually

Governor of NBP (National Bank of Poland) Marek Belka argues that the country will not meet all the Maastricht Criteria simultaneously.

In the next years, Poland faces some fundamental changes. In order to adopt the euro, Poland must change its policy, Belka says. But in the end, fulfilling the Maastricht Criteria is beneficial, he argues. Every single step improves the economic competitiveness, he says. However, it would not be reasonable to implement all the criteria at the same time. “We must implement these steps gradually and cautiously. These steps must be sustainable.” Belka explains. According to the Polish government, the country may introduce the euro in 2016 or 2017.
